Volunteers

Volunteers are an integral part of the New Madison Hospice interdisciplinary team. Our trained volunteers spend time with patients and families to provide support and love in many ways. They keep patients company, read to them, or take them for walks. They give care relief to weary caregivers, run errands, help in the office and provide bereavement support to grieving families.

When you volunteer for New Madison Hospice, you become part of a large family of professional caregivers who continually support and mentor you. If you’re in a health care profession, the education and hands-on experience you gain from volunteering can strengthen your care giving skills. Most important, whether you’re a professional or nonprofessional, giving the gifts of your time and talents to people in their final days could be the most rewarding and fulfilling experience you’ll ever have.

You do not need any special qualifications to become a volunteer; the main qualities we are looking for in volunteers are compassion, dependability, commitment and the ability to maintain confidentiality.

All New Madison Hospice volunteers go through a training course to prepare them for working with patients and families.

Our volunteer services consist of three main categories:

  • Patient and family support services
  • Office staff support
  • Bereavement services.

Patient and Family Support Services volunteers provide companionship, friendly visiting, active listening, bedside sitting, reading, gardening, listening to music, crafts, etc. Volunteers also assist with errands such as grocery shopping, picking up prescriptions and supplies as well as light housekeeping, dishes, laundry, meal preparation, child care, providing transportation to appointments, shopping, and social outings.

Office Staff Support volunteers assist with office tasks like mailings, clerical support, filing, copying, answering phones, and other office duties.

Bereavement Services volunteers provide continued support to family and friends after the passing of a loved one by phone calls and visits, offering comfort and companionship.
